NHS North East London Programme Lead - Diagnosis & Treatment The closing date is 13 October 2026 Apply for this job Job summary This is a rare opportunity to lead one of the Alliance's core programmes at a moment of real ambition for cancer care. The National Cancer Plan for England sets out the goal that three in four people diagnosed with cancer should survive five years or more by 2035, with all cancer waiting time standards met by 2029. The Diagnosis and Treatment portfolio is how we deliver that locally. As Programme Lead you will hold overall responsibility for the delivery, resources and funding of the Diagnosis and Treatment portfolio. You will make sure that once a patient is referred, their diagnosis and treatment is as quick, effective and consistent as possible -- working principally through our acute providers and our tumour-specific Expert Reference Groups, and with patients and carers through the Patient and Carer Voice in Cancer group. You will also provide senior leadership within the Alliance team, deputise for the Managing Director as required, and represent the Alliance at pan-London and national forums. Main duties of the job What you will be responsible for: o Leading the Diagnosis and Treatment portfolio, with overall accountability for resources, funding and delivery.o Delivering and sustaining the three national cancer standards across our acute providers: the Faster Diagnosis Standard (28 days, 75%), the 31-day treatment standard (96%) and the 62-day treatment standard (85%).o Establishing a clear programme framework in line with recognised methodologies and the Alliance's governance structure -- programme plans, milestones, risk management and Board-level reporting.o Reducing unwarranted variation and tackling health inequalities in cancer diagnosis and treatment across our boroughs.o Identifying and scaling innovation -- including AI-enabled diagnostics, robotic and community diagnostics -- and applying quality improvement methodology and data to target improvement.o Negotiating with and holding to account executive and clinical leads within acute trusts, in politically sensitive and sometimes conflicting environments.o Managing a delegated budget, building business plans, and identifying cost savings and revenue opportunities while protecting equitable access.o Leading and line-managing the Diagnosis and Treatment team, and programme-managing cross-disciplinary teams including clinicians, nurses and AHPs, finance, digital and estates colleagues. About us North East London Cancer Alliance is one of 21 cancer alliances in England. We are a partnership that brings together commissioners, providers across primary, secondary and tertiary care, academic institutions, charities, patients and carers, working across Barking & Dagenham, City of London, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. Our aim is that every resident in north east London has equal access to outstanding cancer services -- to prevent cancer, spot it sooner, provide the right treatment at the right time, and support people and families affected by cancer.
